Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women’s soccer team started off their 2012 season with a 3-0 to the 25th ranked team in NCAA division II women’s soccer, the Cal-State Stanislaus Warriors.

“They’re a good team and they’ll do well in their conference this season,” said head coach Shelley Howieson.  “We were missing some starters out there and I thought the players that were in the lineup turned in a solid effort.”

Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Gilliland (Delta, BC) got the start for Simon Fraser and was strong, making several impressive saves among the nine she made on the afternoon.

“There were a lot of moving parts out there with some players playing out of position.  I was quite pleased with the way Amanda played in net.  For a freshman playing her first game, she was very cool under fire,” finished Howieson.

The SFU defence did a good job of limiting Cal-State’s opportunities, with two block shots along with helping cause eight Warrior shots to miss the target.

Karenee Demery took care of the scoring for Cal-State Stanislaus, netting two in first half and one in the second.

Demery scored the opening goal of the game in the 25th minute, putting it past SFU’s freshman keeper after a scramble in the box.

Her second goal came on a penalty kick and the third and final goal of the game went in after Demery snuck in behind the Simon Fraser defence and put the ball into the SFU net.

The SFU women’s soccer team is back in action on Saturday night, against another California Collegiate Athletics Association opponent when they host the Academy of Art at 7:00 p.m.
