YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – September 8, 2011 – The opportunities were there for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team on Thursday at Young Harris. However, the Lakers could not cash in on them.

Despite almost constantly staying on the offensive attack for much of the game, the Lakers could not take advantage of the opportunities as Young Harris pulled out a1-0 non-conference victory over Clayton State. The defeat drops the Lakers to 1-2 overall, while Young Harris improves to 1-1.

“I’m very disappointed in the result,” said Clayton State head coach Gareth O’Sullivan. “We didn’t start playing until we conceded the goal. Everything was way too slow and casual in the first half.”

Each team had eight shots, with Clayton State having four chances on goal. But Mountain Lion goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham came away with four saves. The two biggest came in the final five minutes as the Lakers pushed for the possible equalizer.

After a scoreless first half, Young Harris cashed in on its big chance. The Mountain Lions’ Mika Lopes stole the ball above the penalty box and hammered home the game’s lone goal in the left side of the net.

Laoise O’Driscoll recorded four saves for Clayton State.

The Lakers return home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest against West Alabama at Laker Field.
