UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Former Olympian and MLS standout Clint Peay was named the sixth coach in University of Richmond men's soccer history on Tuesday.

Peay comes to Richmond after serving stints as an assistant coach at George Mason, Davidson and Georgetown.

"We are extremely excited to have coach Peay join the Spider family," Richmond Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator LaRee Pearl Sugg said. "With his coaching experience on the Division I level as well as his achievements as a collegiate and professional player, he has demonstrated that he has all the qualities we were looking for to breathe new life into the men's soccer program. He is committed to the academic achievement of his players and prides himself on helping young men achieve their goals both on and off the field. He is a great fit for Spider Soccer."

Peay's extensive playing experience includes a two-year stint for the U.S. Olympic team from 1994-96. He started every game as a defender for Team USA in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Ga.

Peay was a four-year starter at the University of Virginia, helping lead the Cavaliers to four-straight NCAA National Championships from 1991-94. He also played four seasons in the MLS for D.C. United, helping the team to three MLS Cup titles and one U.S. Open Cup Championship.

"I am thrilled to join the University of Richmond as the men's soccer coach," Peay said. "I look forward to the challenge of coaching in the competitive A-10 conference. The combination of academic and athletic excellence that Richmond values is a big part of why I want to be here. I am excited to work with the players, and help Richmond soccer reach its full potential."

The Columbia, Md. native served as a soccer analyst and commentator for Comcast broadcasts of D.C. United games in 2000 and 2001.

A Parade High School American, Peay was named to Soccer America's All-Decade Team for his play as a defender on Virginia's four national championship teams. The four-time All-ACC selection was also named All-American while playing for the Cavaliers.

 Peay's playing experience also includes playing with the U.S. Under-23 team in France and Holland, and competing on the gold medal East team at the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival. He holds the U.S. Soccer Federation National Coaching "A" License.
