Coastal Gashes Winthrop, 6-0

October 29, 2011

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team dominated the Winthrop Eagles, 6-0, to clinch at least a share of the Big South regular season championship Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.

Coastal Carolina (14-2, 7-0 BSC) has now won 10 consecutive games, the longest streak since reeling off 13 straight in 2003. The loss sent Winthrop to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the Big South.

Coastal’s first goal was the result of a Winthrop own goal.

In the 22nd minute Pedro Ribeiro lit up the scoreboard on a 30-yard free kick to give the Chants a 2-0 advantage.

A minute later, Ricky Garbanzo biked a ball off the crossbar that came out to a wide open Ashton Bennett who sent the ball towards the back post for a 3-0 Chanticleer lead.

Coastal went to the halftime break with a 3-0 lead while out shooting the Eagles 16-2.

Twenty-two seconds into the second period Ribeiro dribbled straight down the middle of the field and slipped through the Winthrop backline where he set up Bennett for a one-on-one with the Winthrop keeper. Bennett, who entered the week leading the country in goals scored and points, slotted the ball to the lower left corner for his 18th goal of the year.

Defender Cyprian Hedrick got in on the action with a header to put the Chants up 5-0. Garbanzo set up the Hedrick goal with a cross to the back post finding the head of Kjartan Sigurdsson who headed it to Hedrick for his fourth goal of the year.

Jordan Schmoker scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from TeeJay East in the 70th minute to put away the Eagles, 6-0 on a cool and windy day in Rock Hill.

Goalkeepers, Scott Angevine and Montrell Morgan combined for the fifth team shutout of the season, as the duo tallied three saves.

Coastal out shot Winthrop 26-8, holding a 13-3 shots on goal advantage. Each team was charged with 12 fouls while Winthrop was booked for three yellow cards and Coastal with one.

Coastal Carolina travels to Presbyterian College for the team’s last road game of the regular season on Nov. 2 before returning home for senior day against the Campbell Camels, Saturday Nov. 5, at noon.
