Colonels have big second half in 8-0 win over MSJ

September 3, 2011

The Centre women’s soccer team turned in another dominant performance in its second match of the year as it cruised to an 8-0 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday in Danville.

Despite dictating play throughout and outshooting Mount St. Joseph 14-1 in the first half, the Colonels had several near misses early on and didn’t find the net until 24 minutes in. Liz Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) finally broke through by putting in a shot that had rebounded off Mount St. Joseph goalkeeper Shelbi Benzinger, and Becca Hinds (Austin, Tex.) added another goal before the half off a Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) corner.

After halftime, the goals began to come much easier for the Colonels. Just three minutes in, Kelsey Boling (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an assist from Amy Hebbeler (Fort Wright, Ky.) and Hebbeler added a long goal of her own off an assist from Kersey. Later, Morgan Collins, who scored three goals in the season opener, got another when she took an assist from Holly Shiels (St. Louis, Mo.) and beat Benzinger in a one-on-one situation.

As time wound down, Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) got her first two career goals, one coming on a header off a Kersey corner kick, and the second coming on an unassisted shot from the top of the box. In the closing minutes, fellow freshman Elizabeth Mason also scored off an assist from Megan Rueth (St. Charles, Ill.).

In goal, Centre’s Kelli Lenz saved two shots on the way to the shutout while Benzinger finished with 11 saves. Overall, Centre outshot Mount St. Joseph 30-3.

With the win, Centre improves to 2-0 on the season and drops Mount St. Joseph to 0-2. The Colonels are back in action Wednesday when they host Capital at 7 p.m.
