Colonels play No. 24 Thomas More play to scoreless tie

September 20, 2011

Despite several chances over the 110 minutes, Centre's men's soccer team was unable to find the net as they played No. 24 Thomas More College to a scoreless draw Tuesday in Danville, Ky.

The shutout was the third straight for the Colonels' defense, which has not allowed a goal since a Sept. 10 loss to Baldwin-Wallace. Reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made seven saves in goal for Centre and has still allowed just one goal this year in four appearances.

"I am really pleased with how we responded after halftime," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "This is our third shutout in a row, and I feel like our team defense is really starting to shine."

The game comes on the heels of a 1-0 victory over Earlham on Sunday in which the Colonels scored with just 1.2 seconds remaining to avoid a scoreless tie. Despite several quality chances in overtime and a shot by Jack Goblirsch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) that struck the left post early in the second half, the Colonels came up empty on the offensive end.

"We had our chances tonight to take this game," Burch added. "And I know our guys will only become sharper there as the season moves along. It's that defense though, that will be what drives to a conference championship."

Overall, Centre took 15 shots to Thomas More's 14, and Thomas More goalkeeper Zack Lawson made eight saves. Centre's record now stands at 4-2-1 while Thomas More remains unbeaten at 6-0-1.

The Colonels will be back in action at home Saturday against Covenant at 6 p.m.
