Colorado College Settles for Tie Against Kean

September 3, 2011

Colorado College men’s soccer team came from behind to salvage a 1-1 tie against Kean University on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Field, but the Tigers certainly weren’t celebrating after the clock ran out. They were too busy lamenting the many missed opportunities that could have resulted in a victory.

Sophomore forward Sean Parham, who scored the game winner during Thursday’s 4-3 overtime victory against CU-Colorado Springs, found the net in the 59th minute, blasting a crossing shot past Cougar goalkeeper Tyler Callhan from 12 yards out.

Junior forward Matt Fechter started the play with a back flick in the midfield that went directly to junior forward Daniel Wright, who directed the ball to Parham who was making a run toward the right post.

“That was quite the play,” Parham said of the passes that set led to his goal. “I was on the outside watching it all develop. Fechter does a little heel volley to Frenchy, and when he got the ball, I was screaming for it and then I was one on one with the goalie from there.”

The Tigers missed out on several opportunities to take the lead during the second half, including a pair of chances that went over the crossbar from point-blank range with the KU keeper on the ground.

CC also had back-to-back chances to get on the board during the 57th minute, but Kean’s Gordon Ling blocked consecutive shots by both Fechter and Wright just seconds apart.

“We could have won the game, but it still was a great result for us,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “And when you put (injured players) Chris Lutz and Brandon Ogilvie back in the mix, we’re even closer to the level at which we should be playing. It’s the little stuff that makes the difference and that’s where we need to get better.”

The Cougars took the lead in the 32nd minute when Erick Solis scored on a header at the right post off of a perfect serve Michael Custidiano from 40 yards out on the left.

In his first collegiate appearance, junior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz made four saves, including one in overtime, during his 65 minutes of playing time. Brian Graf stopped three shots in the first half, including a denial on Kharee Winslow’s shot from the center of the box.

“It was exciting to get in there and play, and help the team out,” Marowitz said. “They’re a good team and they definitely got the ball in on goal. I feel comfortable with out back line, especially the way we communicate. We’re on the same page.”

Callhan stopped seven shots for KU, all of which occurred after the break when the Tigers launched 12 of their 16 shots.

Both teams finished with five corner kicks and are now 1-0-1 on the season.

Colorado College returns to action against the University of Minnesota Morris on Monday afternoon.
