Cook Leads ODU Past VMI, 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. - Amber Cook scored three second half goals as Old Dominion University women's soccer turned a tight game into a route with five second half goals to top VMI 6-1 Sunday evening.

ODU's victory snaps a four-game losing skid and improves them to 2-4 while VMI drops to 1-3 on the year.

With the score tied at one after the first 45 minutes, ODU wasted no time getting on the board in the second half as Caroline Survill sent a free kick into the box that Cook pushed past the VMI keeper to give ODU a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the half.

Ten minutes later the Lady Monarchs were back on the attack as Cook sent a cross pass to Jessie Klamut who headed a shot to the near post past VMI's MacKenzie Harrmann for the 3-1 advantage.

Just two minutes later Cook was at it again as Ashlee Coutu slid a pass to Cook who made it 4-1 and then just 33 seconds later Cook completed the hat trick as Taylor Mertz sent a pass from the left side to Cook as she drilled a shot from 20 yards out over the goalkeeper to make the score 5-1 ODU.

Old Dominion completed the scoring in the 78th minute as Alexis Thomas sent a cross pass from the right into the box toTaylor Smith who beat the VMI keeper to the right for the final 6-1 margin. 

 
 
 

ODU got on the scoreboard first as Devin Dougherty scored her first career goal lofting a shot over the keeper to give ODU a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

VMI tied the score in the 35th minute as Liz Affronti sent a long ball to Christelle Ndongo who sent a shot just inside the left post to tie the score at one.

The Lady Monarchs outshot the Keydets 28-4. Harrmann made six saves for VMI while Kirsten Hancock made one.Brianna Alvarado made one save for ODU.

Old Dominion is back in action on Friday, Sept. 14 when they take on Richmond at 7 p.m.
