ST. LOUIS – SIUE and Saint Louis played 110 minutes of soccer Sunday afternoon, resulting in a scoreless tie in women’s soccer action at Hermann Stadium on the SLU campus. SIUE moves to 2-2-1, while Saint Louis is now 2-4-2.

Playing through heavy rain during much of the game, the two teams combined for 25 shots through regulation and two overtime periods with neither team able to find the back of the net. SIUE held the advantage in total shots 14-11.

“Conditions like this always make it interesting,” SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. “We had a good opponent today. They don’t give up much, and to our girls credit neither did we. Probably 0-0 is a fair result.”

SIUE’s Claire Lovercheck made five saves, including a pair of saves with a less than a minute left in the second overtime period. The senior goalkeeper recorded her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Billiken goalkeeper Katie Walsh made seven saves for SLU.

SLU had two chances with seconds to play. Jenny Hummert got loose in the box with about a minute to play. Hummert went one-on-one with Lovercheck, who made a sliding kick save on the shot from about five yards out. The Billikens then had a corner kick with just 25 seconds to play. Kathryn Brenner got her head on the corner and re-directed the ball on goal, but Lovercheck batted it away.

“She showed great poise,” Burton said of Lovercheck. “Being aware of her surroundings, and the state of the game, less than a minute left and she comes up with a great reflex save. That’s what Claire does.”

The Cougars managed two shots during extra time, though Jenny Humphrey had the only quality chance in either period for SIUE. Humphrey hit a shot from the left wing, which was saved by Walsh.

Both teams had chances in regulation. The Bills and Cougars combined for 10 total shots during the first period. The Cougars put four shots on frame, but Billiken goalkeeper Katie Walsh was up to the task, making all four saves. SIUE opened the second half with two quality chances. Michelle Auer and Humphrey each had shots on goal within the first three minutes of the half.

Regulation ended with the Cougars holding a 12-8 advantage in shots.

SIUE moves on to play its first Ohio Valley Conference weekend with Jacksonville State in town Friday and Tennessee Tech Sunday.

“It’s exciting. We’ll get back to work this week and start game-planning for two games next week,” Burton said. “We couldn’t be more excited than we already are to get going in the OVC schedule.”
