GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 13, 2016) – Wyoming soccer dropped its final non-conference match of 2016 to the Northern Colorado Bears on Tuesday night, 1-0.

Despite tallying 20 shots and putting nine on frame, the Cowgirls (4-3-1) could not find a way to put one in the back of the net. Junior forward Shaina Ashouri’s game-high six shots were the most by any Wyoming player this season, but each of her three shots on target fell into the hands of Northern Colorado goalkeeper Madeline Burdick. The Bears (4-3-1) are just the second team to hold Wyoming scoreless this season

Northern Colorado’s leading scorer Mariel Gutierrez continued the trend with her fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute. After a Wyoming corner was cleared out of the Bears’ box, Gutierrez found space on the counterattack and put home her opportunity.

“It’s a tough game to let slip away," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “I thought we played really well until we got to the 18-yard box, and from there I didn't think our shot selection was the greatest. I felt like it was one of our stronger games, but when we got in front of goal, we couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”

For the fourth-straight game, Ashouri led the Cowgirls in shots. Junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree and junior defender Alisha Bass each played a complete 90 minutes. Despite coming off the bench, freshman forward Michaela Stark logged 60 minutes of action.

The Cowgirls open Mountain West play on Sept. 23, in Boise, Idaho. The matchup with the Boise State Broncos is set for 4 p.m.
