CSU Bakersfield Remains Unbeaten As Roadrunners Tie Fullerton 0-0

FULLERTON, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield remained unbeaten as the Roadrunners and Cal State Fullerton (6-1-2) played to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night at Titan Stadium. The Titans are ranked 19th in the current College Soccer News Top 25 poll. CSUB (4-0-4) is 1-of-8 unbeaten teams remaining in Division I.

“(Tonight) was an excellent match between two great teams in the West (Region),” said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “Fullerton has already played a tie with the defending national champions in Akron earlier this season. I felt we could have won the match in overtime.”

Eric Shannon (Jr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) recorded his 17th career shutout. Shannon made three saves. The Roadrunners had a chance to win it in the first overtime when Richard Menjivar (Sr., Panorama, Calif., Univ. of Evansville) had a breakaway late in the frame, but his shot went off the right post.  The Titans returned the favor later in the frame when Gerzon Blanco’s shot just went wide left with 20 seconds to play.

Shots were even at 18, but the Roadrunners held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The match was a physical affair as each team was issued three yellow cards. Fullerton was called for 24 fouls, compared to 19 for CSUB.

The Roadrunners open MPSF play Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Seattle University at the Main Soccer Field. CSUB will be hosting the Roadrunner Apparel Sale on Sunday as well. Gates open at 12 p.m.
