CSUB And Northridge Tie 2-2 In Men’s Soccer Play

September 15, 2011

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS) scored two goals as CSU Baskersfield and Cal State Northridge played to a 2-2 tie Thursday night at CSUB’s Main Soccer Field.
Zardes opened the scoring with a blast from 25 yards out that went to the right corner of the net in the 25th minute. Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) was credited with the assist on the play. Zardes scored again in the 29th minute off a breakaway that was started by a pass from Kory Kindle (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS).

Thomas Ramos scored the first goal against CSUB in over 200 minutes when he connected off a run at the 43:46 mark. Brian Behrad tied the match in the 59th minute on a chance that began on a Matadors’ corner kick. The tie broke a 22 consecutive match winning streak by Northridge against CSUB that dated back to 1979.

“We were up 2-0 and we let a team get back into it through defensive lapses,” said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “Northridge is a good team and it was a great game. Even when the game was tied, we created great chances to win the game. Obviously, when you go up 2-0 you want to win, but at the same time, I think Northridge will be a top-2 team in the Big West this season. Now, we have to forget about this and focus on Sunday.”

The Roadrunners host Saint Mary’s Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
