BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield exploded for five goals in a 23+ minute span in the first half as the Roadrunners (2-4-1) defeated Idaho State 5-1 Friday night at the Main Soccer Field.

Erica Shelton (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., UC Santa Barbara) and Tyler Shirk (Jr., Monrovia, Calif. (Monrovia HS) posted a pair of goals 31 seconds apart to get CSUB on the board. The Roadrunners again scored in short order as Sam Peña (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) and Joanna Ortiz (Fr., Manteca, Calif., Sierra HS) recorded goals in 57 seconds apart in the 31st minute. Shelton rounded the CSUB scoring with her third goal of the year in the 35th minute. Idaho State registered their lone tally in the 60th minute.

The five goals tied the CSUB Division I record for most goals in a match (5 v. Westmont, 1997) while Daisy Vazquez (R-Sr. Redwood City, Calif., Woodside HS) tied Peña for the school Division I mark for most assists in a match with two.

"In the last few games, we just tried to score right away," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "It made us vulnerable to counter attacks. So we just worked on the first 10 minutes of surviving the storm and composing ourselves. This allowed to wait for quality opportunities. I really think all of our goals were quality opportunities."

CSUB hosts UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. on Monday as part of a doubleheader with the Roadrunners' men's soccer team. The first 500 fans who arrive at Monday’s match will receive a free Vuvuzela. For tickets call 654-BLUE or go to GoRunners.com.
