Daniels' Goal Propels Redhawk Women's Soccer to 1-0 Shutout over Idaho
After back-and-forth play for much of the first half, it was freshman Megan Daniels' (Lake Forest, Calif.) goal that was the difference maker in the Seattle University women's soccer team's 1-0 shutout over the University of Idaho Friday evening. The Redhawks, who put together their second consecutive shutout, remain undefeated on the year (3-0). SU handed the Vandals their first loss of the season (0-1-2).
In the 32nd minute Daniels receive a breakaway pass from sophomoreMonique Escalera (Riverside, Calif.). She took the ball down the right side and sailed in the game-winner from the corner of the 18 yard box for her first career goal.
"Megan scored an unbelievable goal. She had great composure and made an amazing shot. We had a slow start, but a much improved second half. Today's shutout saw another great defensive game from Madison (Goverde) and Jordan (Salisbury)," said head coach Julie Woodward.
While the offense picked up and controlled the tempo of play following Daniels' goal, the Seattle U defense was in sync for the entire match.
Goalkeeper Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) put together her second consecutive clean sheet behind four saves and a strong backline led by central defender Jordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.). The pair of seniors were able to help navigate the Redhawk defensive efforts to hold off the Vandals throughout the game.
In the contest, SU outshot UI 18-10, seeing six shots on frame to Idaho's four. The Vandals did have four corner kick opportunities to the Redhawks one.
Seattle U will head next to Pullman, Wash. to square off with the Cougars of Washington State (1-0). WSU plays Portland before hosting the Redhawks on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m.
