Davidson women's soccer announces 2009 recruiting class

DAVIDSON, N.C. < Head coach Greg Ashton has recently announced that five scholar-athletes will join the Davidson program in August 2009 to kickoff their first collegiate soccer season as members of the Davidson women¹s soccer team.
The five young women were part of Davidson¹s early decision admissions process and are Ashton¹s fifth recruiting class since taking the helm in
2004.
Joining the 2009 Wildcat squad will be the class of 2013: Rachel Barnett (Raleigh, NC ), Louise Timboe ( Littleton, CO), Jessica Calandra (Staten
Island, NY), Julie Calhoun ( Palos Verdes, CA) and Rachael Newmister (Clover, SC).
³I am very pleased to have these five fine young women join our program,² said Ashton, who is 61-32-9 at Davidson and will be entering his sixth year.
³They are wonderful students who have accepted the challenge of being in a tough academic environment, but are also striving for success on the field. I have high expectations for this group and look forward to having them with us as we prepare for another successful year in the Southern Conference and beyond.²
A look at the Class of 2013:
Rachel Barnett
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Hometown: Raleigh, N.C.
Club Team: CASL Spartan Elite
High School: Ravenscroft Accomplishments: Two-time NCSCA All-Region and TISAC All-Conference team member (2006 & 2008) S two-time co-captain for Ravenscroft S two-time Coaches Award winner S also lettered in basketball as a freshman and sophomore S two-time USYS Region III Premier League East champs S is a two-time USYS Southern Regional semi-finalists and two-time USL Super Y League Southeast division champs with club team S academic honors have included: Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Key Club, Ravenscroft community service award and Appalachian Service Project (three years) S a Davidson College Bryan Scholarship finalist.
Coach Ashton: ³Rachel is a very versatile player who has gained experience playing at the highest level with her club team. She is an extremely
consistent performer, who will strengthen our defending and midfield positions. Rachel knows what it takes to be a successful student at Davidson as several members of her family are alums. I look forward to seeing Rachel competing with us in the fall.²
Rachel Newmister
Position: Forward
Hometown: Clover, S.C.
Club Team: Charlotte Soccer Club Girls Blue 91'
High School: Clover
Accomplishments: Three -year letter winner at Clover High School and all-region pick as a sophomore S Coaches Award during 2006-07 season S
all-offensive in 2007-08 S named to all-region in basketball as a sophomore S NC State Cup Champions in 2007-2008 with club team S was a Region III Champion in 2007-2008 S Made it to quarterfinals at regionals in Raleigh during 2006-07 club season S state cup finalists and CASL shootout finalists in 2007.
Coach Ashton: ³I am extremely excited that Rachael will be joining our program. She comes to us from the Charlotte Soccer Club, which plays in the extremely competitive Red Bull league. She will be a great addition to our strike force and will have the opportunity to compete with some experience players to lead our front line. Rachael has a knack for being in the right place to score vital goals and I hope that continues as she enters the college ranks.²
Julia Calhoun
Position: Forward/Defender
Hometown: Palos Verdes, Calif.
Club Team: PVSC Breakers
High School: Palos Verdes
Accomplishments: Five-Year Member of PVSC Breakers S Blues Cup and CSL Champion S an AP Scholar S California Scholarship Federation S National Society of High School Scholars S named to the Principal's Honor Roll S Math Honor's Society S Mock Trial Team.
Coach Ashton: ³Julie is the type player that we have been looking to recruit for the past few years. She will give us great balance on the left side
either in defense or midfield. I like the way she gets forward and is able to deliver crosses into dangerous areas. Her club team, the PVSC Breakers, plays in one of the most competitive leagues in the country, so she will have the experience needed to make an immediate impact with our program.²
Jessica Calandra
Position: Forward/Defender
Hometown: Staten Island, N.Y.
Club Team: PDA
High School: Staten Island Academy
Accomplishments: 2007 prep season was the PSAL league MVP and named to the New York Sportswriters Association Third Team S high school team was the 2008 PSAL champions S NYSA First Team in 2008 and PSAL playoff MVP S lead club team (Montclair Aristocats) to three New Jersey state championships (2003, 2004, and 2007) S region one premier league semifinalist (2005-07) S 2006 super Y league champions S academic honors have included Head of Class honors in 2005, 2007 and 2008 S earned First Honors in 2006.
Coach Ashton: ³I am delighted that Jessica decided to come to Davidson. I have watched her develop over the past several years into a game-changing player. She shows tremendous composure and can play in any position. She has been a valuable member of two high profile club programs in New Jersey and this experience will certainly help our team. She will add a different dimension to our team which we have not had in the past.²
Louise Timboe
Position: Defender
Hometown: Littleton, Colo.
Club Team: Riverside Renegades
High School: Arapahoe
Accomplishments: One of five seniors on Arapahoe squad to commit to play Division I soccer S junior prep season helped lead Arapahoe to quarterfinals in 5A Colorado State Tournament S named to all-conference second-team and named team Defensive MVP as junior S sophomore year led her team to state semifinals S named MVP in state cup final with club team the Riverside Renegades in 2007 S Colorado State Cup runner-up in 2008 club season S cup champions in 2003, 2004 and 2007 S member of the National Honor Society S ranked 15th in class of 527.
Coach Ashton: ³Louise is an extremely strong player who can play anywhere along the backline. She has been part of a state championship winning club and high school programs so she knows what it takes to be successful and win titles. Her competitive nature will add a physical presence to our defensive unit.²
