DAYTON MEN'S SOCCER WINS 5-1 VERSUS NKU

September 6, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team played its first home game of the season Friday night and defended Baujan Field against Northern Kentucky in the second game of the Dayton Flyer Classic. The Flyers picked up a 5-1 win over the Norse.

The Flyers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when sophomore Amass Amankona chipped a ball over the back line to the penalty spot in the opponents' box. Freshman Brian Richards followed up with a finesse chip of his own over the goalkeeper and into the back of the NKU net.

Just minutes later, Richards recorded his second goal of the game and fourth of the season when he crushed a rebounded free kick into the upper-right corner. The freshman forward rushed the goalie and put his body on the line in order to pick up the goal, but unfortunately suffered an injury on the play.

After a fast start, both teams settled in defensively. Dayton kept pushing the tempo, but NKU started to hold off the Flyer assaults.

With five minutes to go in the first half, sophomore Ryan Peterson extended UD's lead to 3-0. An errant shot by the Flyers was deflected by a Norse defender into the path of Peterson, who finished strong with a low shot under the goalkeeper.

NKU came out strong in the second half and got a goal back in the 53rd minute to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Flyers still held the advantage though and rode the momentum provided by a controlled pace and a raucous home crowd.

Senior Abe Keller pushed the UD advantage back to three with 12:50 to go in the second half. The veteran midfielder lined up a free kick at the top of the 18 and curled it into the near side of the net for his first goal of the season.

Sophomore Maik Schoonderwoerd added a goal in the last minute of regulation to ice the game for the Flyers.

In the end, Dayton's offensive prowess and the benefit of playing at home with a veteran team helped the Flyers take a 5-1 win over the Norse.

Dayton (2-0-0) will return to action Sunday in the finale of the Dayton Flyer Classic. UD will host Lipscomb at 2 p.m. after the neutral contest of Eastern Illinois and Northern Kentucky at 11 a.m.
