DAYTON WINS NORTHWESTERN LAKESIDE WOMEN'S SOCCER CLASSIC

August 28, 2011

EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Juliana Libertin scored a golden goal in the 92nd minute to give the University of Dayton a 2-1 overtime win over the host Northwestern Wildcats to claim the Lakeside Women's Soccer Classic title Sunday.

“We had to work hard for that win," said UD Head Coach Mike Tucker. "We had a horrific first half. (Northwestern outshot Dayton 7-2 in the first half). We picked it up in the second half. And then scored quickly in the overtime. I liked that part."

Freshman Kelsey Smigel scored in the 20th minute but the Wildcats tied it up before the half. Junior Colleen Williams had the assist on both goals.

"We put Smigel in and told her to score," said Tucker. "It took her about a minute and she got in behind the defense on a nice pass from Willy (Colleen Williams) and played to the corner of the net. The keeper didn’t have a chance."

Libertin scored the golden goal just 1:42 into the first overtime period.

"Juliana played it to Willy out wide and Willy split the defenders," said Tucker. "Jules was facing goal and drilled the ball into corner. Again, the keeper didn't have a shot at it. We scored two very nice goals but we gave up way too much in the first half. This was not even close to the same team we had Friday night."

Dayton went 2-0 in the tournament with the OT win against the 'Cats and a 3-0 win over Loyola-Chicago Friday. Northwestern went 0-2, losing to Cincinnati 2-1 on Friday. The Bearcats went 1-0-1, tying Loyola-Chicago 0-0 in double overtime Sunday.

The Flyers (4-0-0) host Wisconsin this Friday, Sept. 2 at Baujan Field.

"We play a very good Wisconsin team Wisconsin," said Tucker. "We have to get healthy this week and fix some things. The girls are excited. It's the only game we have this weekend so we’ll put it all into Friday night."
