Dayton women defeat St. Louis
October 12, 2009
ST. LOUIS – Freshman Allison Hu (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) tied the game in the 53rd minute with her first career goal, but Dayton scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime and edged St. Louis(w) 2-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference action Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field.
The Billikens (6-6-2, 3-2-1 A-10), who saw their three-game winning and shutout streaks halted, made a strong bid to hand A-10 leader Dayton (9-0-5, 5-0-1 A-10) its first loss of the season. Hu’s goal was just the fourth allowed this year by the Flyers, who began the week ranked second nationally in goals against average.
Dayton grabbed an early lead when Colleen Williams scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Lauren MacCormick, at the 17:17 mark. Hu tallied the equalizer at 52:45 when she gathered the rebound of a blocked shot and beat UD goalkeeper Katherine Boone.
Williams figured in the game-winning goal as well, assisting Mandi Back on Back’s team-high-tying fifth marker of the season at 108:35.
Sophomore keeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) tied her season high with seven saves, including four in the first half as Dayton tried to pad its early advantage. Boone stopped four Saint Louis shots on goal. Senior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) led the Bills with three shots, two of which were on frame.
The Billikens return to Robert R. Hermann Stadium Friday, Oct. 16, hosting George Washington at 7 p.m.
