DEL STATE SWEEPS GWC WEEKLY AWARDS

October 24, 2011

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Delaware State University soccer team earned Great West Conference Player of the Week accolades for the first time this season by sweeping the awards as junior Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.) and freshman Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) were honored for their play last week, the conference office announced late Monday.

“Our girls have really been working their butts off this season,” stated DSU head coach Nitan Soni.  “I’m proud of both Candace and Katelyn for earning these honors.  It’s a great compliment to our program that our conference has chosen both of them for their weekly awards.”

Wyre, the GWC Offensive Player of the Week, led the Hornets to a 2-1 upset of Utah Valley last Thursday.  The forward notched the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute against the previously unbeaten (in conference) Wolverines, just a minute after UVU tied the game at 1-1.  The unassisted tally was Wyre’s second goal of the season.

“Candace’s goal against Utah Valley was very characteristic of our team,” remarked Soni.  “She played her heart out to get that goal and fully believe we were never out of the game.”

Koslosky, the GWC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded nine saves on 10 Utah Valley shots for a .900 save percentage.  As of late Monday, the goalie currently ranks 17th in the nation with 110 saves, despite missing the first two games of the season with an injury.  She holds an impressive 1.59 goals allowed average in 15 starts this year for the Hornets.

“Katelyn has been tremendous for us, her play has been phenomenal,” Soni commented.  “The fact that she is only a freshman means good things for our program in the future.”

Del State, who is currently 2-13-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the GWC, wraps up regular season play on Friday at Howard.
