NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women’s soccer team tied visiting Saint Joseph’s University, 0-0, following 110 minutes of action at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Both Delaware (2-0-1 overall) and Saint Joseph’s (1-2-1 overall) had a number of opportunities to score, though neither was able to capitalize.

The 0-0 draw was the first tie of the annually played game in its 11-season history. Delaware leads the series that began in 1999 with an 8-2-1 record.

The Blue Hens had hopes of finding the back of the net in the 41st minute when freshman Mimi Kocela sent a shot wide left of the goal before heading to halftime.

During the physical play, senior Caitlyn Germain booted what may have been the Hens’ finest opportunity for a goal at 49:07. Positioned in the top right of the box, the 2008 third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection sent the ball across the goal towards its left corner before Hawks’ junior midfielder Lauren Sawyer made a key defensive save, deflecting the ball out of goal contention.

“They (Saint Joseph’s) played with a lot of heart, I give them a lot of credit,” said Blue Hen head coach Scott Grzenda. “They kept us from doing what we wanted to do.”

In the 62nd minute, Delaware keeper senior Annie Bevan batted away an on-point shot by Saint Joseph’s sophomore Jen Pfeiffer, keeping the game knotted at zero.

Ten minutes removed, sophomore Stephanie Rinschler had a chance at the win when she found Hawk goalkeeper Christine Neal out of position. Though, Rinschler’s shot that brought the home crowd to their feet, flew high of the cross bar.

Bevan made five saves during the stalemate, while Neal recorded just one.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. when the travel to Villanova University for a non-conference match.
