August 19, 2015
USAFA, Colo. – University of Denver men’s soccer freshman Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) headed in the winner in the 55th minute to lead the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over Air Force on Wednesday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Pioneers controlled the possession in the early going, producing five corners in the opening 10 minutes. Shinyashiki nearly found the back of the net twice in the opening 45, one a header just over the crossbar and a second strike from 25-yards out that rattled the woodwork. Denver outshot Air Force 8-3 in the first half, forcing four saves out of Falcon keeper John Wendt. UNC Asheville transfer keeper Dan Jackson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) made two saves in the opening stanza for the Pioneers. DU’s breakthrough came in the 55th minute as Shinyashiki headed home a Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas) cross to put the Pioneers ahead. The goal came just after junior Chandler Crosswait (Bedford, Texas) kept Denver’s 10th corner of the match in the Pioneers’ half. Dunk got the ball down the right to the endline and played his cross just outside the six to the Brazilian’s head for the goal. Jackson finished his evening with three saves before being subbed on for junior Ryan Massey (Bethesda, Md.) in the 78th minute. In the match, Denver outshot Air Force 12-8, putting eight of its 12 shots on target. The Pioneers took 11 corner kicks, including seven in the first half.
