Detroit men beat Wright State

October 13, 2009
Detroit(m) senior Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) netted the game-winning goal against Wright State Saturday afternoon off a penalty kick in the 95th minute to give the Titans a 3-2 victory and their second win in a row.

"This was a huge win for us," said Simon. "This gets us on the map now for conference play and will hopefully boost everyone's spirit against Cleveland State next week.

"It felt really good today to finally get a goal. I had a few chances today, so being able to put one away was a huge."

The game was tied at two at the 77:40 mark, again, off a penalty kick, but this time from WSU sophomore Brian Cothern. In the closing minutes of regulation, Detroit sophomore Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya/) put the ball in the net, but the goal was called off because he ended up being over the goal line at the time.

"I never like to see a game determined on penalty shots, but I think without that overall we were the better soccer team on the day," commented Detroit interim head coach Nick Deren. "At the end of the day, I felt that the result was just and this conference win was huge, but now we need to move on focus on Cleveland State; take one game at a time."

Simon earned another point on the day as he served a long ball from about the 30 yard line in front of Detroit freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central). Senior Ali Youssef (Canton, MI/Plymouth) got a touch on the ball and was able to beat WSU sophomore goalkeeper Corey Whisehunt and put it into the center of the net in the 35th minute for his first goal of the season.

Victor opened up the scoring on the day less than 13 minutes into the contest as he was served a pass from freshman Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) on the right side, and then headed it into the bottom left corner of the net for his third goal of the year. WSU senior Braden Fleak then tied the game at 23:51 off a corner kick.

Waterstradt earned the win after tallying two saves, while allowing two WSU goals and Whisenhunt collected six saves on the day, but did allow three Detroit goals.

Detroit outshot the Raiders, 23-9, and also had a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Titans are on the road for the next three games, which starts with a match-up at Cleveland State on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
