Detroit men defeat UIC

November 8, 2009
Behind a five point effort from sophomore Nate Robinson  (Novi, MI/Novi), Detroit(m)'s soccer team captured a 4-2 victory over visiting UIC on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.

The game-winning goal came in the 52nd minute as Robinson took a corner kick and freshman Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) put it past the goal line to give the Titans a 3-1 advantage. This was Robinson's third assist of the game and Lepera's second goal of the season.

"It is great to end the season with a win, especially because we are sending off the seniors on a winning note," said Robinson. "I think previously we have been unlucky, but I am excited for this victory to transition into next season. I also give Nick Deren a lot of credit for stepping in and helping us finish out the year."

Robinson tacked on an assurance goal about four minutes later off a breakaway pass from sophomore Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya/) and he was able to beat UIC senior goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja and saw his shot trickle into the left corner of the net.

UIC scored its final goal of the contest at the 76:02 mark as freshman Joe Radice beat Detroit freshman netminder Martin Robertson (Newmarket, ON/St. Andrew's) on the opposite corner to put the score at 4-2.

"It was definitely a great thing to send the seniors off with a win," said interim head coach Nick Deren. "The guys rallied around the seniors today and played with some good spirit, and the team as a whole played some good soccer today.

"I think we played some inspired soccer today. We looked good from our goalkeeper, the back line to the midfielders, all the way up to the forwards."

The scoring started at the 28:25 mark as Detroit sophomore Nate Robinson (Novi, MI/Novi) took a free kick from about 35 yards out to the right of the net. Titan freshman Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) was in the middle of the box and elevated his head above everyone else and took a header which went into the center of the net for his first goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later, UIC junior Charlie Trout took a free kick right outside the box, and the ball went through a wall of Detroit defenders to tie the game at one.

Detroit's second goal of the game mirrored its first one as senior Ken Simon's (Brighton, MI/Brighton) header went in the net off an assist from Robinson, who took a free kick from about 30 yards out.

Robertson tallied nine saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of action to put his record at 2-0 on the year, while Bubonja earned the loss for the Flames after playing just over 61 minutes in net and allowing all four Titan goals. UIC outshot Detroit, 16-9, and the Flames also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The four goals marks the highest scoring performance for the Titans this season.

Prior to kick-off, seniors Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) and Ali Youssef (Canton, MI/Plymouth) were honored for all of their dedication to the UDM men's soccer program.
