Detroit women fall to Hawaii

September 25, 2009
Sophomore keeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Twp., MI/Eisenhower) made a career high 14 saves but the University of Detroit(w) Mercy women’s soccer squad was unable to keep the University of Hawaii off the board in a 1-0 loss Thursday evening in Honolulu.

The 7 p.m. match in Honolulu began at 1 a.m. E.T. Friday.

Hinde faced a torrential downpour of shots, and as with all storms there was a rainbow behind it, the Rainbow Wahine to be exact. Hawaii (3-6-1) took 24 shots in the game and put 15 of those on goal. Hinde’s previous high of 12 saves was set against Eastern Michigan at Titan Field on Sept. 2, 2008, in just her third career start. She faced 24 shots in that game as well, a 0-0 tie in double overtime.

The Hawaii attack was led by senior Britta Bourne who tallied 15 of those shots and put 11 on target. Bourne notched the game-winner at the 68 minute mark. Eight of Hawaii’s starters, and 10 players in all, tallied a shot in the game.

The game was the first of two against the Rainbow Wahine for the Titans as part of the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

After departing from Detroit Wednesday morning and spending nearly 18 hours in transit to Hawaii the Titans struggled to produce much offense. Senoir Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball), junior Archana Wadhawan (Troy, MI/Troy), and freshman Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) each recorded one shot. Wadhawan had UDM’s only shot on goal in the contest.

Detroit (2-6-1) will have time to rest up before facing off against the Rainbow Wahine again on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. local time (1 a.m. E.T.).
