Detroit women fall to Loyola Chicago

October 24, 2009
Detroit Titans- Junior Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne’s Secondary) put both of her shots on goal while the University of Detroit(w)'s soccer team put five of six on goal in the game, but with under 10 minutes left Horizon League foe Loyola scored the game’s only goal as the Ramblers topped the Titans, 1-0, in Chicago on Friday evening.

Detroit played a strong first half in a cold rain while the Windy City lived up to its name with the Titans in town. At intermission, the Titans held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. On their best chance to score of the half, Stanski settled a pass in the middle of the box and beat Loyola keeper Katie Groesch to the left, but a defender slid in just in front of the goal line to knock the ball away and keep the score knotted, 0-0.

Stanski’s second shot on goal came around the 70-minute mark, taking a pass from sophomore Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) and then dribbling through a pack of Ramblers and getting off an open shot. But Groesch made a diving stop to her right and thwarted the Detroit scoring chance.

Through the first 80 minutes of action UDM limited Loyola to just two shots on goal and it looked as if the Titans might be headed to overtime for the second straight contest. But in her first action of the year after recovering from a pre-season injury Ramblers forward Cynthia Morote-Ariza, the two-time defending HL Player of the Year, received a long pass from teammate Allie Roufus and beat sophomore keeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Twp., MI/Eisenhower) to the left for the game-winner.

You can’t win games when you don’t score, said UDM head coach Mike Lupenec. You have to finish the opportunities given to you. We had plenty of opportunities to put the game away in the first half, and we just didn’t do it.

Lupenec added, There was nothing with our effort, our attitude, our character or the way we played the game. We just didn’t get result we wanted.

Senior Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) and sophomore Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s) each recorded one shot on goal, and freshman Danielle Goszczynski (Harrison Twp., MI/L’Anse Creuse) took one shot as well.

HInde made a big play to keep the score even at the 19:30 mark. The Ramblers’ Laura Trevillian was fouled in the box, but Hinde made a save on the ensuing penalty kick to keep Loyola off the board.

With the loss the Titans drop to 3-12-2 overall and 1-5-1 in league play, and with one game remaining in the season, are eliminated from conference tournament contention.

The Titans will conclude their season on Sunday as they host the Raiders of Wright State on senior day. The Raiders (9-6-2 overall, 4-2-0 HL) are currently in second place in the Horizon League.

Detroit topped Wright State last season in Dayton, OH when Kochanski found the net less than two minutes into the second overtime to give UDM a 1-0 victory. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Titan Field and you can catch all the action with Gametracker.
