Diving header by Hawks nips Patriots 1-0

October 18, 2017

FLORENCE, SC – A diving header by senior Ben Chapman in the 49th minute carried Chowan University to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Oct. 18) in men’s soccer action.

FMU (6-7-0) will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when the Patriots entertain Georgia Southwestern State University at 7:30 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, Chowan’s Denis Roule sent a low cross in from the right side of the box and Chapman dove toward the Patriot goal heading the ball in from three yards out at the 48:34 mark.

The Hawk’s defense made that score stand up as they limited Francis Marion to only four shots – two in each half.  Chowan goalkeeper Elliot Chadderton registered three saves.

FMU sophomore Jordan Dechere forced a save by Chadderton in the 22nd minute with a shot from the top of the box.  Three minutes later, Patriot freshman Jonas Dovland attempted a shot from inside the penalty area, but again Chadderton was up to the task.

Francis Marion’s freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar posted four saves as the Hawks tallied 10 shots.  Chowan held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
