Dominican women's soccer adds 11 for 2014

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominican University of California women's soccer Head Coach Tara Koleskihas announced the signing of 11 student-athletes in her first recruiting class with the program.

The 2014 recruiting class will strengthen a core that already features three Pacific West Conference All-Conference players. In Koleski's first season, 2013, the Penguins matched their win total from 2012 and finished at 7-9-2 overall and 4-7-1 in Pacific West Conference play (9th of 13). Dominican posted a perfect 3-0 conference mark against its PacWest rivals in the Bay Area.

"Our large incoming class consists of well-rounded players who will make an impression on the program. The 2014 class will provide athleticism and excitement for the women's soccer program," said Koleski. "The freshmen have an array of experience ranging from top-ranked ECNL teams to competing on varsity bBoys soccer teams. They have already proven that they fit in well with our current roster so it will be exciting to see what the future holds for us."

Quianna Ashley-White, midfielder
Brentwood, Calif. / Liberty HS

On the field, Ashley-White was a BVAL All-League Honorable Mention and played club soccer for Diablo FC and EDYSL.
A 3.85 student, Ashley-White plans to major in biological sciences. She made the Honor Roll all four years of high school; earned the Athletics Director's Academic Award; Scholar-Athlete Award; and, as a freshman and sophomore, the NCS Scholar-Athlete award. Additionally, Ashley-White served as senior class treasurer.

Hallie Balch, midfielder/forward
Lancaster, Calif. / Desert Christian HS

Balch attended Desert Christian High School, where there was no girls soccer team her senior season so she played on the boys team. As a junior, Balch was chosen as team captain and made All-League First Team. As a sophomore, Balch was named the AV Press Athlete of the Week. The 5-foot-1 Balch was also the kicker on the football team her senior year and received All-League Honorable Mention.

She received the AV Press Future Leader award and is beginning her third season as the host of Disney Channel's Game On. A 4.0 student, Balch plans to study communications at Dominican.

Sami Clausen, defender
Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Vista HS

In addition to playing defender for Desert Vista, a top ranked 5A school in the Phoenix area, Clausen started for SC Del Sol's ECNL team, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2013. Clausen boasts a 3.7 GPA and will major in business administration.

Katrina Cline, midfielder
Santa Rosa, Calif. / Cardinal Newman HS

Cline is a four-year varsity soccer player, having begun her prep career at Ursuline before transferring to Cardinal Newman. She was named All-League Second Team as a sophomore and Most Athletic as a freshman. Cline has been the co-captain of her club team, Santa Rosa United ECNL, the last eight years.

Cline was a CIF Scholar-Athlete all four years of her prep career and has a cumulative GPA of 3.82.

Christina Cummings, midfielder
Elizaville, N.Y. / Stissing Mountain HS

A rare five-year member of the girls varsity soccer team, Cummings played varsity ball as early as eight grade. She served as team co-captain her junior and senior seasons. She was a Poughkeepie Journal Section IX All-Star First Team member, two-trim Poughkeepie Journal Section IX All-Star Honorable Mention. She was team MVP as a freshman and earned the team's Hustle and Heart award as a sophomore. As a junior, she earned a Certificate of Recogntion by Section IX Soccer Coaches for Outstanding Play. Cummings also led her team to Sectionals for the first time in school history.

Cummings played club ball for the Kingston Wariors of the Kingston Area Soccer League (KASL) for 11 years and was a three-year co-captain. Her team won the 2010 EHYSL U18 D1 Championship, Eastern New York State Challenge Cup Championship in 2010 and 2011, and Metro League Championship in 2012.

A five-year scholar athlete and a third degree blackbelt in Taekwondo, Cummings has a 3.83 GPA and plans on studying occupational therapy at Dominican.

Sylvanna Islas, goalkeeper
Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino HS

A three-year starter at Sabino, Islas played club ball for Tucson Soccer Academy. In her senior season, she was named one of 10 Arizona Daily Star Pre-season Southern Arizona "Players to Watch." She was named to the Arizona Daily Star All Southern Arizona First Team as a junior and garnered Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Islas was the starting goalkeeper for the 96G Red team, which captured the 2013 Arizona State Cup Championship.

Islas boasts a 3.82 GPA and intends to study health sciences at Dominican.

Mariah Meza, forward
Santa Rosa, Calif. / Windsor HS

A four-year starter at Windsor, Meza received First Team All-League honors for three consecutive seasons and scored the game-winning goal during double overtime of the quarterfinals in 2012. She was named the Maxpreps Player of the Year in 2014. She was named her team's Rookie of the Year in 2011, and the Golden Boot (offensive player of the year) and team MVP from her sophomore to senior campaigns.

Meza played club soccer most recently for Santa Rosa United Blizzard of the ECNL, where she has been captain from 2007-14.

Additionally, she has served as Windsor's ASB secretary.

Lina Miller, midfielder
El Granada, Calif. / Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts

Miller was the starting center midfielder for MVLA club team, Mercury Blue, and before that competed for the Pacifica United Pioneers, where she also started. A 4.0 student, Miller will be studying biological sciences at Dominican.

Payten Sonnen, defender
Portland, Ore. / Sunset HS

Sonnen was a four-year varsity starter at Sunset, where she was also team captain. She learned Second Team All-League (6A Metro) as a junior. In the past three seasons, the Apollos played their way into the Class 6A state championship game twice and racked up a 36-11-8 record for a .766 winning percentage. She was named the 2013 6A State Championship Player of the Game.

She has played ten years with Tualatin Hills United Soccer Club (THUSC) Sodium.  THUSC Sodium is a four-time Oregon State Champion and three-time Oregon State finalist.

A 3.3 student, Sonnen will be studying business administration at Dominican.

Ivy Torres-Flores, forward
Pleasanton, Calif. / Millennium HS

Torres-Flores will bring a tremendous amount of experiecne to the roster as a center midfielder with experience playing for Pleasanton Rage ECNL team. She was a four-year member and three-year captain of the varsity squad at Millennium, which won section titles her freshman and sophomore seasons in 2011 and 2012. Millenium won the league championship three consecutive seasons from 2010-2012. Torres-Flores was named CCAA All-League First Team in 2012 an 2013. She was ranked as high as No. 11 by TopDrawerSoccer.com as a player to watch in Northern California and Hawaii.

A 3.7 student, Torres-Flores was on the Honor Roll all four years of high school and is a member of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF). She plans to major in biological sciences at Dominican.

Cienna Wilkins, midfielder
Rocklin, Calif. / Del Oro HS

As a sophomore at Del Oro, Wilkins was named team MVP. She played club for Placer United Soccer Club in Sacramento, Calif. Of Dutch, Indonesian, and Mexican decent, Wilkins has impressive speed and attacking presence and will be sure to add to the Penguin offense. She will major in psychology.
