Doran and Gallagher Earn Patriot League Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - In recognition of collecting a 1-0 overtime victory over Loyola on Saturday night, the Navy women's soccer program had a pair of players garner Patriot League weekly honors on Tuesday. Sophomore Caitlin Doran (Queens, N.Y.), the game-winning goal scorer, was announced as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Mattie Gallagher (Gilbertsville, Pa.) was honored as the league's Goalkeeper of the Week for her efforts in the Mids' first shutout of 2020-21.

Playing their first game in 28 days, Doran helped the Mids earn a 1-0 golden goal victory over PL South divisional rival Loyola on the road Saturday night with a header goal in the 94th minute. Tied 0-0 in regulation, the sophomore forward flicked in a free kick from Avery Fries to earn Navy its first win of the 2020-21 season.

The freshman goalkeeper earned her first collegiate shutout with as she backstopped the Mids in their 1-0 overtime victory against the Greyhounds. Gallagher turned aside both shots that Loyola put on goal during the PL South divisional game. This is the second weekly award for Gallagher as earlier this season she was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on March 2.

In addition to Doran and Gallagher's awards, Avery Fries (Jr., Draper, Utah) was recognized in the honorable mention section of the Patriot League's award announcement for helping Navy post its first shutout of 2020-21, holding Loyola to just nine total shots and two on goal. In overtime, Fries started the game-winning play as she served a free kick deep into Loyola's zone where Doran headed it in for the golden goal in the 94th minute.
