NEWTON, Mass. - The Duke women's soccer team continues to play excellent soccer and held strong at sixth-ranked Boston College on Thursday night falling, 1-0, at the Newton Campus Soccer Field in Newton, Mass.

With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 7-4-4 overall and 3-4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while the Eagles improved to 14-2-1, 6-2-1.

"It was a tough match as Boston College is really good," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "I thought we were pretty good at times. In the first half, we were just a step off, a little loose on our markings, were not tight enough and we didn't challenge them enough on the first and second balls."

In the first half, the Blue Devils were held to only one shot off the leg of sophomore Cody Newman in the 22nd minute, while Boston College attempted nine shots. The Eagles took an early, 1-0, lead as Amy Caldwell posted her third goal of the season off a rebound in front of the goal in the 25th minute.

"We were disappointed on the goal [allowed] as we gave up a soft goal," said Church. "We didn't go a good job of marking their players coming in, the ball came off the goalkeeper and they knocked it in."

The Blue Devils came out in the second half and tried to mount an attack to equal the match as freshman Nicole Lipp attempted Duke's second shot of the contest less than four minutes into the stanza. Blue Devil senior Elisabeth Redmond then fired Duke's lone shot on goal that was saved by Eagle goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni.

"In the second half, we made a few adjustments and then they [Boston College] came out in a different formation than we thought they were going to come out in and maybe that threw us off of our aggressiveness a little bit. We just needed to be more aggressive tonight. We were able to create some dangerous opportunities, but we didn't give a good final ball. We made a good effort tonight but just came up a little short."

Duke senior KayAnne Gummersall added a shot in the second half as the Blue Devils were outshot 15-4 for the match.

In goal for the Blue Devils, freshman Tara Campbell played the entire 90 minutes, while notching four saves. Mastroianni notched one save for Boston College.

Duke will conclude the regular season on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m., contest at N.C. State.
