Eagles Tie Virginia Tech, 2-2 (OT)

September 27, 2019

BLACKSBURG, Va. -  Senior Joe Kellett scored the biggest goal of his BC career. Kellett, who transferred to BC after his sophomore season, scored in the 90th minute as the Eagles and No. 18 Virginia Tech played to a 2-2 overtime draw in an ACC game Friday afternoon.

Both teams entered the game looking for their first conference victory. Boston College is now 5-2-1 (0-2-1 ACC) and will host Merrimack on Tuesday at 4 p.m. No. 18 Virginia Tech is also 5-2-1 (0-2-1) and will host Gardner Webb on Tuesday.

The gutsy Eagles battled all day, especially since they played the final 59 minutes down a man. Freshman

Alejandro Zimmermann received a red card in the first half on a high kick that was deemed a dangerous play.

Virginia Tech responded in the 58th minute on a goal by Daniele Pereira. The Eagles tied the match on senior Lasse Lehmann’s first goal of the season in the 68th minute of play. Amos Shapiro-Thompson was credited with the assist off a corner.

BC goalkeeper Christian Garner (five saves) kept the game knotted at 1-1 on a save off a set piece by Virginia Tech just outside the box in the 62nd minute. The Hokies would break through and took the lead in the 68th minute when Marc Hoppler was left in the box alone and placed the shot to the far post from 10 yards out.

With 30 minutes to play, Garner again came up big for BC making a stop on a shot from Pereira to keep the Eagles within one goal. BC patiently waited for its opportunity and it would come from senior Adam French. He was dropped just outside the box, which set up a set piece for BC.  Kellett stepped up and placed a low shot to the left of the wall. The shot slid just inside the post to tie the match with just nine seconds to play.
