Early Goals Send Panthers Past D'Youville

September 27, 2011

A flurry of early goals propelled the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s soccer team to a 3-0 win against D’Youville Tuesday.

All three of the Panthers’ goals came in the opening twenty minutes, and the defense would stifle the Spartans the rest of the way to preserve the shutout. On the day, Pitt-Bradford outshot D’Youville 10-2.

Lindsay Sherman opened the scoring in the third minute on a breakaway for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Less than seven minutes later, D’Youville was whistled for a foul in the box setting up a Linsey Stack penalty kick. Spartan goalkeeper Shelby Sargent came up with a save on the attempt, but Stack collected the rebound and scored to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. It was the second time this year that she has collected her rebound on a penalty kick and scored.

In the 20th minute, Alex Snellbaker fired a shot that deflected off a D’Youville player and found the back of the net to complete the scoring. It was Snellbaker’s first tally of the season, and she marks the 12th different player to score for the Panthers this year.

Alisa Cornell posted her fifth shutout of the season in net.

“We had few nice passages of play today but on the whole we were a little off the pace,” said head coach Mike Idland. “We are going to have to find another gear to shift into when playing the top teams in the conference coming up soon.”

Pitt-Bradford improves to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Panthers will host Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 3 p.m. in key AMCC match.
