GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s soccer team was defeated, 2-0, by Marshall in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

“I thought we were flat in the beginning,” said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. “It was a one-game weekend and I was expecting more energy from them. We need some leaders to step up on this team. There were spurts where we played all right, but we need to play a full 90 [minutes].”

Marshall (7-4-2, 2-2-1 C-USA) did a good job maintaining possession and forcing East Carolina (4-8-2, 1-4-0 C-USA) into turnovers in the early going, before capitalizing on a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Summer Wheatley sent in a corner kick that went untouched until it found the leg of midfielder Lizzy Lemons on the opposite side of the goal box, where she volleyed a shot into the top of the net to give the Thundering Herd a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates immediately countered with a pair of shots on their next possession, but could not produce an equalizer. Marshall had a series of corner kick opportunities in the 41st and 42nd minutes, and on the third try, Wheatley sent a low-lining cross into the box, which was deflected in by an ECU defender for an own goal to give the Thundering Herd a 2-0 lead.

Redshirt junior midfielder Lexi Miller and junior forward Stephanie Seagrave led East Carolina with three shots apiece in the match, while Miller recorded two shots on goal. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Saundra Baronmade four saves for the Pirates.

Marshall held a slight, 12-11 edge in total shots in the game, while earning a 9-1 advantage in corner kick chances.

“We need something to change the momentum for us right now,” Donnenwirth said. “We need to play with a little more urgency.”

East Carolina will head to Miami, Fla., next Friday, Oct. 18, for a C-USA road match against Florida International at 7 p.m. The Pirates will return home Sunday, Oct. 20, to host Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m., at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
