ECU Extends Win Streak With 2-1 Victory

September 4, 2011

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman Mackenzie Semerad netted her first collegiate goal in the 65th minute helping East Carolina (3-1) to its third-straight win of the season Friday night, 2-1, over Davidson (1-2-1) at Alumni Stadium.

The game, originally schedule to start at 7 p.m., was delayed almost an hour and half after a heavy rain and lighting storm came through the area. With the win the Pirates improve to 3-0 all-time against the Wildcats and have outscored their opponents 8 to 2 in the last three matches.

Leading 1-0 in the second period, Semerad sent a shot towards the left post off a pass from junior Caty Butler extending the lead to 2-0. For Butler it was her seventh point of the season, one shy behind team leader Kimmy Cummings who has eight.

"This was a good win on the tonight," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Davidson is a high pressure team and our backs were outstanding. I think we could have possessed the ball better, but we did create good chances with good transition play."

ECU jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first half thanks to Cummings' fourth goal of the season at the 13:42 mark, which came on a rebound in the box. Fellow classmate senior Leah Bagonis was credited with the assist, her third which leads the Pirates.

Trailing 2-0, Davidson finally got on the board in the 83rd minute when Julia Singley scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Rachel Stelter that she pushed past Christiane Cordero.

Cordero notched her third win of the season and 12th career after facing four shots and registering one save in 90 minutes of work. Jessie Baxa recorded three saves on 10 shots allowing a pair of goals in 90 minutes.

The Pirates held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage (10-4 total shots), while the Wildcats had six corners compared to ECU's two.

ECU will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon when they wrap up its road trip against Charlotte with a 4 p.m. (ET) start scheduled.
