KINGSTON, R.I.  – Rookie Kate Elson scored her first collegiate goal in notable fashion on Friday night as she found the back of the net with less than 90 seconds remaining on the clock to lift George Washington women’s soccer to a 1-0 win over Rhode Island in its Atlantic 10 opener on Friday night at the URI Soccer Complex.

Elson tallied the unassisted game-winner at the 88:35 mark when she collected the ball at the post and turned to put the ball in the left corner past a diving Rams' goalkeeper.

GW is now 4-2-3 on the season and 1-0 in A-10 action. The Colonials' six match unbeaten streak is now their longest since the 2010 season, which is also the last time GW won its conference opener. Rhode Island falls to 5-7-0 overall and 0-2 in the A-10.

The Colonials staved off an offensive onslaught by the Rams as they were out-shot, 16-4, on the night. Each squad’s attempts were split evenly between the halves. Senior Nicole Ulrick stepped up in goal making a career-high 10 saves, setting aside five shots in each frame.

Rhode Island tallied the first six shots of the contest before GW sophomore Brooke Bean made an attempt of a corner kick from Elson at 29:25 that forced Rams’ keeper Chelsea Broghamer to make a save. Junior Nicole Belfonti took the Colonials’ second and the final shot of the half at 42:31 that Broghamer was also forced to keep out.

Belfonti fired the Colonials’ first shot of the second stanza at 56:22 but her attempt went high. Neither team could break the scoreless tie until Elson’s goal with 1:25 showing on the clock.

GW returns home on Friday, Oct. 11 to host defending A-10 Champion La Salle at 3 p.m.
