TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team used some late heroics to escape with a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris Sunday afternoon at University Stadium. With the victory, the Knights remain in first place with three more points and improve to 8-4-3 (5-0-2 NEC) on the season, while the Colonials fall to 4-10-2 (1-5-2 NEC) overall.

Senior Antony Moore ripped a shot from the right side that deflected off the far post, and the rebound came to him in the air, which allowed him to place a header into the back of the net for the lone goal with 2:04 remaining in the match.

Over the final 10 minutes of the match, FDU was super aggressive on the offensive attack. Senior Jack McVey had a good opportunity on the left side, but the shot he took was saved.

In the 82nd minute, freshman Simon Doherty took a shot inside the box, which hit the right post and bounced back. Twelve seconds later, McVey had another chance, but once again his shot was saved.

In the 85th and 86th minutes, redshirt junior Jeffrey Barrenechea and Moore each had shots, which were turned away as well. Freshman Jan Aubert then had a shot blocked by the Robert Morris defense seven seconds after Moore’s shot.

At the begging of the 88th minute, the Colonials had an opportunity, but the shot was blocked, which led to the Knights’ counter attack and Moore’s game-winning goal.

All day long, FDU was dominant on the offense end, outshooting Robert Morris 23-10. Colonials’ goalkeeper Toba Bolaji came up big for the visitors all day as he made seven saves (five in the second half), which none seemed to be easy.

A big play with less than 10 minutes in the first half occurred when Robert Morris took a shot that looked to heading into the goal, but junior Nicholas Walker was in the right place at the right time and was able to block the shot from going in.

Not to be outdone was junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek, who came up with five big saves for the Knights, three in the first half and two over the final 45 minutes. He now has four shutouts in a row and five over the last six matches to give him seven on the season and 18 in his career.

FDU has not allowed a goal in 426 minutes with the last one coming right before halftime in its 2-1 victory two weeks ago at Mount St. Mary’s.

The Knights outshot Robert Morris 9-6 over the first 45 minutes and 14-4 in the second half. The Colonials held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks after being down 4-2 in the category at halftime.

“I thought we played great today and completely controlled the tempo and rhythm of the game,” Head Coach Seth Roland said. “We created so many opportunities, but between their goalkeeper Toba (Bolaji), who played a tremendous game, and between hitting the post three times and not being quite sharp in our finishing kept the outcome in doubt until we scored in the final couple minutes.”

“We had to stay alert defensively because Robert Morris has some very explosive attacking players, but I thought we did a pretty good job containing them. Putting together a fourth clean sheet in a row is great, and I am very proud of how we played. I thought the guys did a great job.”

FDU will have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 when it travels to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant at 12 p.m.
