Fifth-Ranked Tritons Pound Broncos, 4-0

October 5, 2011

POMONA, Calif. -The No. 5 UC San Diego women's soccer team dispersed of Cal Poly Pomona 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Kellogg Field.

Hayley Johnson connected with Cassie Callahan and Izzy Pozurama off corner kicks as the Tritons improved to 4-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in CCAA play.

UCSD sits atop the CCAA South as the only undefeated team in the Division. CPP and San Francisco State are tied in second place at 2-1-1 in conference play and 4-1-1 overall. The Gators' and Broncos' only losses came at the hands of the Tritons this weekend.

Anne Wethe got the scoring underway less than two minutes into the second half by trickling-in a header to the far post off a cross from Sarah McTigue. It marked Wethe's second goal of the year and McTigue's first assist of 2011.

Callahan's goal in the 54th minute was her third goal in three matches. She currently leads UCSD with three goals, 17 shots and six points on the young season.

Pozurama and Kylie Hill registered the first goals of their Triton careers less than ten minutes from time. Johnson fed Pozurame at the top of the six off a corner in the 84th and Hill picked-up her own with two minutes remaining.

Johnson leads all Tritons with four assists this year. All of them have come off corner kicks.

Hill did well to pick-pocket a Bronco defender at the top of the 18. She fired a quick shot over the keeper's reach to polish-off the match for UCSD.

The Tritons are off to their best start since 2007. That year's team started 10-0-1 in its first 11 matches.

UCSD faces another big CCAA weekend ahead, starting with a road match at No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, September 23, at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Tritons' first seven matches of 2011 were on the road, but UCSD will host its first home match of the season next Sunday, September 25 at noon against Cal State San Bernardino. The match will be the first leg of a doubleheader and will be followed by the men's soccer game vs. CSUSB at 2:30 p.m.

UCSD will also be celebrating the Triton Soccer Kickoff, a 10-event competition between participating youth soccer clubs in the San Diego area. With a specific point system per event, the club that compiles the most overall points will win the perpetual trophy that it can keep in its trophy case for the next year. Competitions include: a four-person dribbling relay, two-person juggling, target shooting, individual headers, individual juggling and many more. For more information on how to sign-up, click here.
