Filigno’s Penalty Kick Pushes Rutgers Women’s Soccer Past Dartmouth, 1-0, in OT

September 11, 2011

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2011) – Sophomore Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) buried a penalty kick in the second minute of overtime, lifting the Rutgers women’s soccer team (5-2) past Dartmouth (1-3), 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field.

“It’s another overtime victory, and we were dominant during the overtime period,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “That is because we wear down opponents. We wore down this team. That is one of our benefits – we have a deep roster. We still have to play better soccer and execute. It’s still early in the season, but we start BIG EAST play next week and we have to be ready for these types of situations.”

Filigno drew a foul in the box on Dartmouth goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders in the 92nd minute, and was awarded a penalty kick. The sophomore forward buried it in the bottom right corner of the net, ending the match and giving the Scarlet Knights the win. It marked Filigno’s first overtime game-winner and second-ever penalty kick.

Rutgers nearly got on the board 12 minutes into the game, as freshman Stefanie Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) touched the ball to classmate Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada), who curved the ball just high of the net.

Dartmouth almost broke the scoreless draw in the 59th minute, as Marina Moschitto corralled a corner and made an attempt at the net. The ball got by junior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.), who attempted to punch out the cross, but redshirt junior Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.) made the save on the line.

The Scarlet Knights open up BIG EAST play Friday, Sept. 16, hosting Villanova at Yurcak Field. Kickoff will be at approximately 7:30 p.m. after the men’s team faces off against Iona.
