FLORENCE, SC – Lander University scored four first-half goals and went on to claim a 4-1 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Sept. 28) in women’s soccer action.

FMU (0-9-0, 0-4-0) will travel to Clayton State University for a 5 p.m. kick-off on Saturday.  The next home contest for the Patriots will be their Senior Day match against Young Harris College on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.

Senior Tori Whigham scored the Patriot goal in the 66th minute, but Francis Marion was unable to get any closer. Whigham’s score, her third of the season and 13th of her career, came after a long ball from senior Kelly Anthony found freshman Avery Towns along the left sideline and Towns’ cross into the box found Whigham who scored on a 14-yard attempt.

Junior Kari George scored for Lander in the sixth and 34th minutes to put the Bearcats up 2-0.  Emily Jermstad added a third goal in the 40th minute before Kirsty Ellinger completed the Bearcat scoring with a tally 37 seconds later in the 41st minute.

Francis Marion junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami equaled her career high with 10 saves as Lander registered 27 shots.  The Bearcats (2-4-1, 1-1-1) also took 10 of the match’s 11 corner kicks.

Freshman Carli Gauthier and Whigham each recorded two shots to pace FMU.

Lander goalkeeper Megan Wiley earned the win, but did not make a save.
