SAINT LEO, Fla. (Women’s Soccer) – In 110 minutes of soccer, neither Florida Tech or Saint Leo could find a goal to end a second match in a scoreless draw this season. The Panthers outshot the Lions 29-5, including a margin of 17-2 in the first half on Wednesday at University Field.

“Our intensity was great and I liked that we put them under pressure from start to finish,” head coach Fidgi Haig said. “We have to give Saint Leo credit, though. They did a very good job keeping our players behind the ball and making it difficult for us. Their keeper made some incredible saves, including two or three shots that I thought were going in.”

Florida Tech (6-4-3) opened with the game’s first 10 shots--four on goal. Saint Leo (2-10-2) registered its first shot of the game in the 31st minute. The Panthers finished the first half with a 17-2 shot advantage, while also recording seven corner kicks to the Lions’ one.

Senior Kelly Whittaker and junior Carly Hunt combined for 12 of the 17 shots in the first half.

Saint Leo’s Abby Evans made seven of her 12 saves in the first session to keep the game scoreless at the break.

The Panthers recorded eight more shots in the second session, and held the Lions to just two.

The teams battled through two scoreless overtime period for the second time this season with the Panthers recording four shots in the second overtime period.

On Sept. 22, the two teams played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer at Rick Stottler Field with the Panthers outshooting Saint Leo 34-4 in the match. In 220 minutes, Florida Tech has outshot the Lions 63-9 with neither team recording a goal.

“We are looking forward to Barry this weekend,” Haig said. “We are at home and have a good record there. Our intensity at home has been very high this season.”

FIT has accumulated a 4-0-1 record at Rick Stottler Field this season, and will defend its home turf against Barry on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. It is the final conference game of the regular season.

The women’s soccer team will also host their “Kick for the Cure” game to raise awareness for breast cancer. The team will be collecting donations during the game to donate to the Susan G. Komen Kick for the Cure Foundation. They will also continue to collect new and used soccer equipment for “The GIVE N GO Project.”
