Flowers Scores In Final Minute For Gaels Win

November 12, 2017

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team picked up its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win in dramatic fashion over Quinnipiac on Wednesday afternoon.  Graduate Erika Flowers scored the game-winning goal with 47 seconds on the clock to give the Maroon & Gold a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Bobcats.

Senior Charlotte Stuart netted her first goal of the season in the 10th minute to give Iona an early 1-0 lead.  The Gaels battled through and maintained a lead until the 85th minute when Bobcat junior Al Pelletier tied the game with her fourth of the year.

Salvation for the Gaels with moments ticking away before the end of regulation.  Flowers scored her second game-winning goal of the season with a rocketed line drive strike into the upper right corner.  Setting up the goal, junior Mariana Jaramillo pushed it forward with a lobbed pass that breached the Quinnipiac back line.  Flowers took a touch and created space to drill it in for her team-leading third goal of the season.

Stuart's first half net-rattler elevated her into a tie for second place all-time in program history with 16 career goals.  She is now tied with Maggie Prairie ('06), and trails only Tatum Nussbaum ('94), who registered 32 goals in her career.

Quinnipiac outshot Iona 15 to 12 in the game.  Both teams had five shots on goal.  The Gaels were held without a corner attempt while the Bobcats picked up three.

Iona kept one of the MAAC's most prolific scorers, Quinnipiac's junior Nadya Gill, off the board despite her six shots.  The Gaels leading shot-taker was Jaramillo with five, only one on goal.

The next game for the Maroon & Gold is on Saturday, Oct. 14 on the road in Lawrenceville, NJ at Rider University.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
