FLORENCE, SC – Six different Midshipmen scored as Navy downed Francis Marion University 6-2, Sunday afternoon (Aug. 23) in women’s college soccer action.

FMU took an early 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute when sophomore Amanda Hall took a pass from freshman Rebeccah Hoekstra and chipped the ball over the hard-charging Navy goalkeeper Beth Reed and into the net.  It was Hall’s second score of the young season.

Navy responded with five unanswered goals.  Senior Shelly Moeller scored at the 13:17 mark when she headed in a free kick by Carissa Youker.  Hoekstra nearly put Francis Marion back on top, but her shot from the left side in the 16th minute glanced off the left post and away from the Navy goal.

Five minutes later, Midshipmen senior Brittany White made it 2-1 on an 8-yard shot following a pass from Anastasia Abid.

The margin moved to 3-1 when Brittany Fruin headed in a service from Amanda Serfass at 26:31.  Navy led 4-1 at halftime after Stephanie Lomeli scored on a 14-yard shot following a cross from Fruin in the 30th minute.

Christine Calderon scored Navy’s fifth goal on a short shot at the 56:21 mark, thanks to assists from Abid and Youker.

Francis Marion senior midfielder Angela Salem brought the Patriots to within 5-2 in the 76th minute with a 3-yard shot.  The scoring sequence began with a corner kick by sophomore Kiley Williams which was headed by senior Rachel Rubin to Salem, who was positioned inside the 6-yard box and in front of Navy reserve goalkeeper Hannah Legler.

Navy sophomore Annie Kendzior completed the scoring in the 83rd minute when she took a pass from Jen Grijalva along the left sideline and scored on a 12-yard shot.
