Fordham Women's Soccer Falls to Manhattan, 1-0

September 9, 2011
The Fordham University women''s soccer team made its shortest trip of the year, venturing across the Bronx to take on Manhattan College in the annual Battle of the Bronx on Friday night. Only one goal was scored in the match and, unfortunately for the Rams, it was by the Jaspers as they pulled out a 1-0 win at Gaelic Park. Devon Lutz netted the game''s lone goal, winning a 50/50 ball from Fordham keeper Rachel Suther in the 63rd minute and burying the ball in the back of an open net. It was Lutz''s first goal of the year. Fordham controlled play over the first seven minutes, getting two shots on net, one from Katherine Wah and one from Annie Worden, but Manhattan keeper Kara Davis kept both shots out of the Jaspers'' net. In the ninth minute, Manhattan threatened, first on a shot from Lutz and, ten seconds later, on a Megan Lavecchia blast, with both shots being knocked away by Zieman. The Rams had opportunities for the tie in the final minutes but a Jessica Widmann shot was blocked in the 85th minute and a Kelsey Dougherty Howard scoring chance was turned aside by Davis in the 89th minute. Suther finished with three saves in the Fordham net while Davis recorded eight for the Jaspers as the Rams outshot Manhattan 22-8. With the loss, Fordham falls to 2-3-1 on the year while Manhattan improves to 1-2. The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, September 11th, as they host the Stony Brook Seawolves on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 p.m.
