Fort Lewis hosts Otero JC to open preseason

<p>DURANGO, Colo. &mdash; The top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II national champion Fort Lewis College men&rsquo;s soccer team hosts Otero Junior College in an exhibition game tomorrow (Sunday, August 19) at 11 a.m. at Dirks Field.</p> <p>The game gives fans their first chance to see the 2012 squad in action. Admission to the exhibition game is free.</p> <p>Fourth-year FLC head coach Oige Kennedy will dress 22 players for the game. The eleven who will not dress will likely do so a week from today, when the Skyhawks hold their annual alumni game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 25.</p> <p>Fort Lewis was ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire preseason rankings for NCAA Division II and was the unanimous choice to repeat as Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions in last week&rsquo;s RMAC preseason coaches&rsquo; poll.</p> <p>The Rattlers, a junior college team from La Junta, Colo., were ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire preseason rankings for junior colleges.</p> <p>&ldquo;They&rsquo;re a good team that got to the national tournament in their first year (of soccer),&rdquo; said Kennedy. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve played them in the spring before up at Mines.&rdquo;</p> <p>The Rattlers were the surprise team of 2010, posting a 15-1-1 record in their first season of competition and winning the NJCAA Region IX and West District championships. Otero was 14-3-2 last year, losing in the Region IX finals.</p> <p>Fort Lewis posted a 24-1-0 overall record and went 13-1-0 in RMAC games in 2011, winning the NCAA Division II national championship when Berekk Blackwell headed home a corner kick in the second minute of overtime in a 3-2 win over Lynn. In addition to their third golden NCAA trophy since 2005, the Skyhawks also won NCAA-II Central Region, RMAC regular season, and RMAC tournament titles.</p> <p>The Skyhawks open their 2012 regular season with a critical regional showdown against No. 10 Incarnate Word at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 31 in Golden, Colo. The Skyhawks beat the Cardinals 1-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals last November.</p> <p>FLC&rsquo;s regular season home opener is against arch-rival Colorado Mines at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 16 at Dirks Field.</p>
