Four Goal Second Half Leads Dores to Victory
August 28, 2022

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt soccer team continued its strong start to 2022 with a 4-0 victory over visiting Providence Sunday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Four individuals scored in the win while the Commodores picked up their fourth shutout of the season.

In a physical first half, the Commodores created a few chances to score but were unable to beat the Friars’ keeper, firing four shots on goal. In total, Vanderbilt outshot its opponent, 7-1, through the first 45 minutes of play.

The Commodore offense came out firing in the second half, opening up the scoring in the 55th minute when the Friars were whistled for a handball in the box to set Ella Shamburger up on the penalty kick. The captain brought a confidence to the kick, throwing the Providence goalkeeper off her stance and scoring the go-ahead goal.

Three Commodores followed suit, as Addie Porter, Hannah McLaughlin and Brooke VanDyck all scored their first goals with the team in the 4-0 victory.

With the win, Vanderbilt improves to 4-0 on the year and returns to the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex Friday when they host East Tennessee State.

Goals

  • Shamburger set up for the penalty kick in the 55th minute. Reading the goalkeeper’s left dive, the fifth-year defender sent her shot center for the 1-0 lead early in the second half.
  • Raegan Kelley’s cross to Rachel Deresky at the top of the box hit off the forward’s right foot, bouncing to a scrambling Porter who sent a shot into the top right corner. The goal was Porter’s first collegiate goal and gave the Commodores a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute.
  • McLaughlin’s first career goal came unassisted in the 75th minute when the rookie beat multiple defenders and fired a blast from outside the box on goal. The Friars’ keeper dove to make the initial save but the ball bounced off her outstretched arms and over the goal line for the Commodores’ third of the night.
  • The Commodores found the goal once more when Tina Bruni’s cross from the far right wing was picked up by VanDyck off a missed defensive stop by Providence. VanDyck’s goal came at 85:02 to give the Commodores the 4-0 final.
