Fye Heads Home Game Winner; UW-W Undefeated
Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) headed in the game winning goal off of a throw in by Sam Novak (Milton/Milton) in the 98th minute of the game to defeat Dubuque University 1-0 Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. UW-W, ranked 21st in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III National Poll, improves to 3-0-0 this season while the Spartans fall to 2-2-0.
The Spartans seemed to have most of the momentum in the first half outshooting the Warhawks 6-4. Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine), UW-W's goalkeeper, made four crucial saves to keep the game scoreless.
The second half was played a bit more evenly with both teams firing off four shots and each goalkeeper making one save. Regulation ended in a fury as Dubuque ripped a shot from inside the box that sailed wide right as the horn sounded.
Overtime swayed in favor of the Warhawks as much of the play was on their offensive end. The Warhawks got off two shots to none for Dubuque, scoring on the second to end the game.
Mikesell, and the Warhawk defense, have not allowed a goal yet this season. Mikesell climbs into a tie for fifth in the UW-W record book with ten career solo shutouts.
The game was littered with fouls. Dubuque was whistled for 16 and the Warhawks for 17. Each team was also issued two yellow cards.
The Warhawks will take their unbeaten record on the road to Dubuque, Iowa on September 12 for a game against Loras College beginning at 8:00 pm. UW-W will look to reclaim the "Hawk Cup" in the second annual match with the Duhawks. Last year Loras defeated UW-W 4-2 in Whitewater. This season Loras boasts a number three ranking in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III National Poll.
