Gannon Blanks Marauders

Millersville, Pa. – The Gannon women’s soccer team made its first-ever trip to Millersville on Friday. The Golden Knights shut out the Marauders by a score of 2-0 to extend their all-time series lead to 2-0 over Millersville.

Gannon (8-3-3, 5-3-3 PSAC) scored in the second minute of play to take an early 1-0 lead. Amanda Sharbaugh chipped the ball from the left side to find teammate Anna Colaizzo in the middle of the box. Colaizzo sent a header high to the left side to beat Millersville’s Ashley Matyasich.

The Golden Knights dominated the first side, outshooting Millersville (5-7-1, 3-7-1 PSAC) by a margin of 9-3.

In the second half, Gannon wasted no time to find a second goal. Sharbaugh, earning her third point of the game, extend the Golden Knights’ lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute. Kara Prokopchak passed the ball up to Sharbaugh, who was standing at the top of the box. Sharbaugh struck the ball high and through a crowd of people. Millersville’s Laura Reed, who replaced an injured Matyasich, misread the shot and went left only to see the ball go to the right side and hit the twine.

Millersville is now on a four-game losing streak in conference play.

The Marauders host Mercyhurst tomorrow at 1 p.m. for their final home game of the regular season. Millersville’s seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the game.

Also, fans who attend either the women’s or men’s soccer game tomorrow will receive a free ticket to the football game against Kutztown following the men’s soccer game at 7:30 p.m.
