ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers saw their 272 minute scoreless streak end, but got goals from Morgan Garcia and Lauren Manna to defeat the Saint Leo Lions in their Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer opener at University Field on Saturday.

Despite leading 14-4 in shots in the first half, the Buccaneers (3-1-0, 1-0-0 SSC) were held scoreless for the first 44 minutes. But with less than a minute left to go before halftime, Barry forward Kayla Hodge ripped a shot that rebounded off of Saint Leo goalkeeper Abby Evans and Morgan Garcia was there to knock in the rebound for a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Lions (2-4-0, 1-1-0 SSC) evened the match in the 63^rd minute when Shanelle Edwards sent an cross into the area and Barry defender Amber Smith, in an attempt to clear, accidently knocked the ball into the Buccaneer goal to snap a scoreless streak that stretched back the first game of the season.

Barry continued to keep pushing, however, and took the lead back with 11 minutes left in the game as forward Emma Karp assisted Lauren Manna, who connected with the ball and sent a shot past the diving Evans.

The Bucs held a 20-7 edge in shots, including a whopping 14-3 in shots on goal, and led 11-3 in corners. Evans made nine saves for the Lions and got help from her defense which saved three more. Rogers made two saves for the Bucs.

After a season-opening loss, the Bucs have now won three straight.

The Bucs host their arch-rivals, the Lynn Fighting Knights, on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 pm as Barry kicks off Rivalry Week. The men’s team faces the Knights on Wednesday, while the volleyball team hosts Lynn on Sept. 25.
