SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore Joe Eubanks scored in the final minute of the second
overtime period to break a 1-1 tie and propel UC Santa Barbara to victory Tuesday evening in
the Gauchos’ exhibition match with the Mexican U-17 National Team at Meredith Field at
Harder Stadium. The 2-1 win came in front of a season-best crowd of 8,425.

The game-winner came when sophomore Danny Barrera’s corner kick found Eubanks right in
front of the goal. Eubanks merely pushed the ball past the keeper to prevent the teams from
entering a penalty kick shootout.

Mexico was first to get on the scoreboard in the 38th minute when Daniel Guzman deflected
a shot by Oscar Garcia from 12-yards out, finding an opening on the right side of the goal.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, sophomore Peter McGlynn beat his defender one-on-one
and scored on a shot to the high right corner of Mexico’s goal from the top of the box in the
49th minute.

It was the two team’s goalkeepers that really shone, however, during the match, each
winning Player of the Game honors. UCSB’s Trond Helge Takset allowed one goal while
making eight stops for the Gauchos. For Mexico, Antonio Rodriguez made five stops.

For the game, Mexico out-shot UCSB 30-16, but had just a 9-8 advantage in shots-on-goal.

UCSB will be back in action on Friday at San Diego State. The Gauchos will return home on
Sunday for their Big West Conference opener against defending league champion, UC Irvine
at 6:30 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
