ROCK ISLAND, ILL.-Forward Aleksandar Glavas (junior, Loves Park, Ill., Guilford HS) scored the game-winning goal less than 10 minutes into overtime as the Dutch men’s soccer team stunned Augustana (Ill.) 2-1 in overtime.

Central tied the game 1-1 midway through the second period, but needed the extra frame to complete the comeback. Glavas scored his sixth goal in as many games in the 100th minute to give Central the overtime win. Glavas controlled a pass and used one touch to elude the Augustana goalkeeper and put the ball in the back of the net. Midfielder Kyle Maynard (senior, San Diego, Calif., West Hills HS) played a diagonal ball onto Glavas’ run for the assist.

“That was a real character-building win for us today,” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “We talked about learning lessons from previous games and this game was a classic example of application. It is nice to see a young, somewhat inexperienced team come through in a pressure-filled moment. To come on the road and go down one goal to an undefeated team, all while playing on a different surface and in the rain, is a tough situation. Today’s result shows that this team has something special and we are ready to build on it.”

The two teams played scoreless for more than two-thirds of the first period. The Vikings took the early lead in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal.

Augustana (2-1-1) led in first-period shots (9-5), shots on goal (5-1) and corner kicks (3-1).

Goalkeeper Josh Carpenter (freshman, Chelsea, Ala.) made four saves in the opening frame.

“We felt we played a good first half,” said Laidlaw. “We were disappointed in conceding a goal, but we were confident in our game plan. We did not change a lot in the second half and the trust we showed our players paid off. We applied a lot of pressure and we got the breakthrough we needed.”

The second period was much of the same, as the two teams played nearly two-thirds without a score. This time, however, the Dutch equalized. Midfielder Mark Hentschel (junior, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) evened the score in the 71st minute, his first goal of the season. Glavas assisted on a free kick from midfield, which sat up in the box for Hentschel’s finish.

“Augustana is a very good team,” Laidlaw said. “They made life difficult for us. We stayed patient without stretching our formation. It is a credit to our players because they never thought the game was over. Once we equalized, our confidence built and we gained the momentum.

“It was a good sign that our heads never went down and our attitudes stayed positive. It is nice to be rewarded for that.”

Central withstood a late surge by Augustana, as Carpenter made a point-blank save late in regulation and saved another shot as time expired.

“Sometimes goalies need to make one critical save and Josh did just that,” said Laidlaw.

Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

Augustana led regulation in shots (17-13) and shots on goal (9-4), but the two teams were even in corner kicks (4-4).

Glavas led the Dutch attack with seven shots, four on goal. Hentschel and midfielder Dillon Thornbury (senior, Memphis, Tenn., Collierville HS) added two shots apiece. Carpenter made eight saves in goal.

Less than 10 minutes into overtime, Glavas sent Central home with a win.

The Dutch (3-3) return to Illinois on Wednesday for a non-conference game at Monmouth (Ill.) at 5 p.m. Central leads the all-time series 9-5-1, including a 5-0 shutout of the Fighting Scots (1-4-1) in Pella last season.
