Goals From Mkosana and Dzierzawski Lead Dartmouth to 2-1 win over UMass

September 25, 2011

HANOVER, N.H.- The Dartmouth men's soccer team used second-half goals from senior forward Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and junior midfielder Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Township, Mich.) to defeat UMass, 2-1, at Burnham Field on Saturday night.

Trailing 1-0 just minutes into the second half, Mkosana picked up his third goal in as many games, on a pass from freshman midfielder Colin Heffron (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) in the 67th minute.  Heffron collected the ball out of the Dartmouth backfield and streaked up the sideline finding an open Mkosana for the score, which tied the game at 1-1.

After several changes of possession, Dartmouth found the game-winner from nearly the same spot as its first goal. Dzierzawski weaved his way through the UMass defense and after several attempts by the UMass defense to clear the ball, found the ball at his feet and pushed it past the outstretched hand of UMass goalkeeper, Shane Curran-Hays to end a two-game Dartmouth slide.

Mkosana led the Dartmouth offense with five shots on goal while Dzierzawski added his first goal of the season and Hefron collected his first collegiate point. Sophomore goalkeeper Noah Cohen (Johannesburg, South Africa) made two saves in 90 minutes of action for the Big Green.

After a scoreless first half, the Minutemen opened the scoring just five minutes into the second half. Josh Swartz capitalized on a Dartmouth deflection in the box to give UMass the early lead. Chris Rowess, who posted two shots, led the Minutemen offense while Hays made six saves on the night.

In the first half, the game see-sawed back-and-forth with both team posting several scoring opportunities. The Big Green had most of its chances late in the half and none was more opportune than a header from junior defender Teo Larsson-Sax (Kalmar, Sweden)  that was just inches away from giving Dartmouth the early advantage.

Dartmouth held a staggering, 12-5, shot advantage and utilized nine corner kicks in the contest.

Dartmouth is back at Burnham Field for its Ivy League opener against Princeton on Saturday (Oct. 1). Gametime is set for 3:30 p.m. and is the second game of a double header with the Dartmouth women's soccer team. The women also take on the Tigers starting at 1:00 p.m.
